Young parents are my clients. One of the best parts of my job is working with young families. I am often the only lawyer they have ever met with and they can’t believe they are at the point in their lives that they are in an estate planning office. Many times they have made an appointment because their parents have said something like, “Now that you have kids, it's especially important to make sure you have a Will in place, in case something were to happen to you.”
During these initial meetings, I explain the difference between a Will and a Trust (refer to this blog post to learn more "What is a Children's Trust?") and they realize they definitely need a Will but want a Trust too. I’ve heard many of my clients say that they feel like “real-life” adults now that they have a Will that nominates a guardian for their children and a Trust that provides funds for their children.
Because so many parents feel this way, we like the idea of a hashtag. The #adulting one comes to mind. We've even toyed with the idea of having tee shirts made that say "I #adulted at RRPG". I know I will show how much of an “adult” I am when I admit that I’m not actually sure what a hashtag does, but I know that young adults are doing it and we are here to help you do the same.
